“I’ve been called every name in the book,” said Buffalo Bill NFL player, Brad Butler, as he tried to hold the attention of the vast crowd.
“I’m not afraid to call you out,” he said as he stood in the crowded auditorium, waiting for the excitement and talking among the students to cease.
However, Butler wasn‘t there to talk about his football career, but something just as important to him: politics.
“My job is to sell you that politics is a good thing,” said Butler. “Politics works better when citizens are involved.”
“I got involved by joining groups, and reading the newspapers,” said Butler.
As Butler continued to discuss his political life, he read to the audience the first sentence of the Declaration of Independence.
“’We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness,’” said Butler.
“We take these freedoms for granted,” said Butler. “I assure you, the second they are taken away, you will realize.”
As the assembly turned to a close, Butler delivered his own thoughts, talked about how to be involved and experienced questions not involving his political career.
“Just read, and understand what’s going on,” said Butler. “Get role models and attend city and county meetings.”
“It looks great on college application,” said Butler. “Remember, power lies in the people not government.”
