    Lovelady Takes Presidential Stand

    Story By: Kelsey Hammond, Reporter

Freshman Luke Lovelady is new to high school, yet he’s a responsible class president.

“It’s nice to be able to tell yourself you’re the leader of something,” said Lovelady as he explained what it’s like to be president of the freshman class.

“During homecoming week it got overwhelming and I didn’t know what I was doing.” Lovelady admitted.

“If something goes wrong, you feel like it’s your fault,” he said as he expressed the hardships of being class president.

According to Lovelady, the job is stressful but is an honor as well.

“People come up to you and ‘hey you’re class president.’ It feels good to be recognized,” said Lovelady.

Lovelady said he ran for class president on impulse, rather than having planned it out. He said the hardest part was writing the essay. Another difficulty for him was that he had to run against his friends. He almost found himself backing out as he felt his friends deserved it more. Although Lovelady had his doubts, he does not regret his decision simply because he likes to be in control and he thought it would be cool to be class president.

Lovelady’s role as president is to raise money and help improve his class overall. He works concession stands and participates in extracurricular activities, such as Young Life, the Quiz Bowl, Swimming, Track, and Cross Country. He said it’s important to show school spirit.

Mrs. Jennifer Rudolph, class sponsor, feels that Lovelady was the right man for the job. She said she looks for students with leadership qualities and the desire to be the best they can, and she believes Lovelady has those qualities.

Rudolph wasn’t the only person in charge of the final decision though; Lovelady’s peers played a great role in the outcome. Lovelady needed 100 signatures from this peers in order for him to even run for president. Then, he had to write his essay and get it approved by Rudolph. Finally, he had to give his speech and wait for the votes from his classmates. So, not only did Rudolph see his potential to be great, but his fellow classmates as well, as he received the most votes.

Lovelady has yet to prove his classmates wrong, as he is still working hard and will be attending the freshman class officer meeting Friday, March 5.

His ideas to help improve the freshman class are to help social groups, as in people getting along better. Also, he wants to raise a lot of money. He said his goal is to raise enough money so the freshmen won’t have to borrow from the other classes for prom. There was a bake sale during homecoming week which Lovelady said was successful. He is working towards other fundraisers to bring in money as well, such as selling breast cancer awareness bracelets, candy, and more bake sales.
