    Staff Editorial: Scheduling

School and stress—two words that we all hate, yet are familiar with. Somehow, they even bond together. School is stressful, and stress can often revolve around school. However, it doesn’t have to be that way.

Let’s look at the facts—today’s schedule can be rough for anybody, whether it is the new student or the experienced senior. It’s confusing at times and obviously doesn’t work well come delay time. Mondays end up feeling awkward compared to the rest of the week. And it seems that the even periods get an unfair advantage over the odds—we see these periods on Monday, then again on Tuesday, when the information is still fresh in our minds. Come Wednesday, we can barely remember what we were learning in odd classes.

We, as a staff, believe that a 4×4 schedule would work better due to its less stressful flow and expanded time periods. It does have faults of its own, yes, as do the other two, but it also fixes some of the problems the other schedules propose. For example, lessons wouldn’t be crammed because of time shortage and days would be less stressful. There wouldn’t be as much confusion for new students. Delays wouldn’t be such a problem as they are now, with our current schedule.

While a 4×4 schedule fixes these minor problems that sprout from either of the 2 other scheduling options, it also has the potential to fix something the other 2 both fail to recognize: grades. By splitting major subjects between semesters, it makes it easier for a student to be successful with his or her grade in one subject without fretting for another. It also gives a student more time to accomplish a satisfactory grade in a subject they may have been uneasy about before.

In conclusion, we believe a 4×4 schedule is a more sensible choice. It reduces the stress of having a lot of major subjects at once and it can help improve grades. Also, it fixes some of the faults the other options have and replaces them with a more controlled, less confusing system.

    Personal Experience – Destiny Teeter
A 7-period Monday schedule could be even worse than our current one. I moved here about mid-October. Before that, my middle and high school had a 7-period schedule throughout the week. It was chaotic.Firstly, the change in classes is hard to follow. I would start off learning about faults in science, then factoring in algebra, then the Civil War in history. It not only gets confusing, but rough to be expected to remember so much all day, every day. Even rougher still was having multi, ple tests in multiple classes in 1 day.

Secondly, this type of fast-paced schedule irritated the teachers, too. They would often be rushing to finish a lesson in time for our next class. In turn, we were often held back from our next class—or even lunch—due to the shortage of time.

Okay, i strongly disagree about the “4×4″ schedule next year. Because some of the classes here at WHS need a whole year to complete. And having the block schedule will ruin it. And plus when you have a block schedule you have to cram everything in a semester instead of a year. And less time for homework. The schedule we currently have is working perfectly fine. We can have more electives to enroll in and complete in a whole year, all year. Instead of a semester. That would just make it all worse. I’m sorry to say. But it is. Thanks.

I don’t really like the idea because i would get tired of having the same classes every day for a long period of time even if i did like them a lot..it might be nice ,I don’t know,but…..i think it would really get kind of boring and hard to focus. Some of my classes i dread having every other day this year,so it would be tough to have classes i don’t like next year everyday.I would just like a switch off with classes because they are going to be tough next year for me

I appreciate the thought that the faculty has taken to help fix the budget problem and everything. But changing the schedule makes no sense to me. Changing to a “4×4″ is difficult. I go to Gov. School in the morning and for my friends in the county they talk about how much they hate the block schedule. It makes it harder to have time for homework and juggling other activities. The WHS sports and arts will also be effected. Also, as a rising senior, everything that I have learned through my high school career will change. I love our schedule and I think that changing it will cause more harm than it will bring good.

I disagree with the four-by-four schedule.
While it does have some pros, I believe that it has many more cons. For example, if you wanted to have chorus all year round, you would have to take it both semesters, therefore defeating the point of getting an extra course choice. Also, the main courses (English, Math, Science, and History) would have to fit just as much information into have as much time. This would make each course significantly more difficult. Another thing to note is absences. If a student was sick for a week (or even a couple days), it would be much more difficult to make up the work by the end of the semester while keeping up with the work that would be assigned DAILY for each class, instead of every other day like it is now. Please consider these points while deciding whether to have the four-by-four scheduling next year. Thank you for your time in reading this.

I appreciate the thought of the budget cuts and all but the 4×4 schedule is an idea that only certain people agree with. To me it really sucks, it will be very hard to cram our education in most classes in just one semester. i strongly dissaprove of this statement, it didnt work well in middle school, so why would you think it would be better in high school when everyone gets closer to our senior year to where we need the most classes we can get. dont change to schedule, cause if you do youll have alot of mad teenagers.
